Galicia’s capital city, pilgrim’s destination, university hub and a centre of galician culture: welcome to Santiago de Compostela.
Arriving in Santiago
Santiago de Compostela is a small city by modern standards. The stable population is just below the 100,000 mark. However, life in the city is quite vibrant, a feature one must thank to the ominous student presence (the University of Santiago has almost 30,000 students) and the pilgrimage-fueled tourism.
The airport of Santiago de Compostela is 16 kilometers away from the city, and receives around 2 million passengers every year. It’s connected by highway to Santiago de Compostela and other relevant cities in the area, such as Pontevedra, A Coruña, Ferrol and Vigo. Transfer options include taxis, urban buses (every 30 minutes) and private transfer services.
Romans, saints and pilgrims
Before the formal foundation of the city, the territory hosted a roman settlement, which lasted until the 5th century AC. The birth of the city known as Santiago de Compostela is linked to the discovery of the (allegedly) remains of apostle James, in first half of the 9th century. The discovery transformed the city – almost automatically – into a pilgrimage hotspot, a label that lasts until our days. In the 17th century, St. James (Santiago in spanish) was designated as the country’s official patron, consolidating the city’s reputation.
