Malaga is a cultural city that is both authentic and sophisticated at the same time. The refurbished port receives many cruise ships and the city which is on the famous Costa del Sol is close to resorts like Marbella. As one of the oldest cities in Spain, its roots are Phoenician. However, Roman and Arabic influences left their mark before the Christian era.
Today, with reasonably priced flights to Malaga and excellent transport links, Malaga is coming into its own. You can make your way around the city by bus, underground (metro), train or on foot. You can also hire a bike or Segway and design your own itinerary. The city is promoting itself as an artistic place, with lots of museums and galleries. Malaga is Picasso’s birthplace and as such the Picasso Museum exhibits some of his great works here. It was inaugurated in 2003. Close by, and also in the old centre, you can visit Casa Natal where the artist was born. Other museums are the Pompidou Center, the Contemporary Museum, the Carmen Thyssen Museum and many more.
The Malaga Cathedral is magnificent and opened in 1782. It is in the historical centre. While in the area, pay a visit to the Atarazanas Central Market and soak in the atmosphere. It is housed in a renovated old building with beautiful stained glass windows.
A break from the city is close at hand. Visit the ruins of Gibralfaro Castle which sits atop Gibralfaro Mountain, overlooking the city. On the other hand, you may wish to stroll in the Botanical Garden or in the Paseo de España Park. Both promise and deliver as far as exotic flora is concerned.
The Holy Week processions at Easter are memorable for their floats, long robes and religious fervour. Should you miss that, there is the August Fair which commemorates the Catholic Monarch’s taking over of the city in 1487. Expect fairs, flamenco music and bullfighting. All the ingredients for a fiesta in the south of Spain. The Malaga Film Festival usually takes place in spring or early summer.
